Leadership Development/Teens

Empowering the next generation of leaders

Teens are the future leaders of our community and at the Y, we ensure we’re giving them the power to succeed. Through service learning opportunities, leadership clubs and drop-in Teen Centers where everyone is welcome, we’re creating an inviting and inspiring atmosphere for these young adults to thrive.

The Cape Ann YMCA has a long history of serving youth and teens in the Gloucester and Rockport communities. Through drop-in Teen Centers, service learning projects and leadership clubs, our Y is truly making an impact on the lives of students in these two towns.

Our two Teen Centers are a home away from home for many kids looking to socialize after school in a fun and positive environment.

Our Teen Leaders Clubs give students a place to build their leadership skills and self esteem, while making a difference in their community through volunteerism. The Gloucester Teen Leaders each volunteer 8-12 hours per week at local non-profits like the Open Door Pantry, Harvest Meals, the Red Cross, Toys for Tots and the Cape Ann YMCA.

Our Y also hosts a Youth & Government program. Youth and Government uses the YMCA core values to teach teens in grades 9-12 how they can participate in the democratic process. Participants have opportunities to develop skills, make friends and learn how they can make a difference in their communities through active participation in government.

Each April, the Cape Ann Y's Teens take part in their signature service learning trip to New Orleans, Louisiana. Over the course of a week, local students give back to residents of this city who lost their homes to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Preparation for the trip takes shape in fantastic fundraising events, where teens learn to advocate for themselves, and the project cumulates in a week long experience that changes their lives.
