06-16 YMCA Synchro Swimmers Go to Championships

Local trio performs at synchronized swimming championships

The Region A Synchronized Swimming Intermediate and Age Group Championships were held May 22-23 at the New Canaan YMCA in New Canaan, Conn.

Approximately 250 swimmers from New York, Connecticut Massachusetts, and New Hampshire attended this event in order to qualify for the National Championships to be held in Indianapolis, Indiana at the end of June.

Elle Mitchell, daughter of Denise and Bill Mitchell, a 7th grade student at Ipswich Middle School, and member of the North Shore YMCA Selkies Synchronized swimming team for the past four years, competed in three events during the competition.

Mitchell, along with her teammates Molly Boal of Hamilton, and Mary Concannon of Beverly competed in the 14/15 Age Group Trio portion of the competition with a fourth place finish and a score of 62.798, qualifying this routine for the National Championships.

Mitchell, Boal and Concannon, along with Olivia Sheedy of Rockport, Amanda Surels of Beverly, and Liz Knowlton of Essex also competed in the 14/15 Age Group team portion of the competition, winning a bronze medal with a score of 63.585, also qualifying this routine for the National Championships.

In the individual 14 and Over Figure portion of the competition, Elle finished sixth overall with a score of 61.475 out of approximately 105 swimmers ranging in age from 12 to 19 years.

Another Ipswich resident and member of the North Shore YMCA Selkies team, Meghan Olsen, also competed in three events at this competition in New Canaan, Conn. With their duet, Olsen and her partner, Abbey Warren of Topsfield, won the silver medal with a score of 49.402 points in the Intermediate 11 and under category.

With their trio, Olsen and her partners, Jessica Marlor of Beverly and Molly Piper of Hamilton won a silver medal with a score of 48.021 in the 12/13 Intermediate category. Olsen also participated in the 11 and under individual figure competition and placing fifth overall.

Olsen is a 4th grade student at St. Mel Independent Day School, and the daughter of Susan and David Olsen of Ipswich.

The North Shore YMCA Selkies Synchronized Swim Team consists of swimmers from the North Shore area and practice at the YMCA in Gloucester, the YMCA at the Sterling Center in Beverly, and the Ipswich Family YMCA.

The New England Synchronized Swimming Age Group Championships were held the weekend of May 8-9 at the Ipswich Family YMCA.

Swimmers from Massachusetts, and New Hampshire competed in this event to qualify for the Regional A Championships.

Mitchell competed in two events during the competition. Mitchell, along with her teammates Boal and Concannon competed in the 14/15 Age Group Trio portion of the competition, winning a silver medal with a score of 60.038.

Mitchell, Boal, and Concannon, along with Sheedy, Surels and Knowlton, also competed in the 14/15 Age Group Team portion of the competition, winning a gold medal with a score of 58.639.
