History
Continuing a long-standing tradition of values-oriented service in the Beverly community, the Greater Beverly YMCA expanded from its humble Cabot Street facility to the Sterling YMCA in 1978 to further serve the community. The Sterling YMCA is situated on thirty-four acres of land off Essex Street in Beverly and serves approximately 10,500 committed members.
The Sterling YMCA started on donated land by the family of Lester O. Sterling in 1958, to serve as a youth day camp. Construction of an indoor, six-lane 25 yard pool and locker rooms were completed in 1978. A fitness area and indoor running track were added to the aquatic center in 1980 and two dance studios in 1988. The Sterling YMCA continues to operate a summer camp, Camp Sterling Woods, behind this full facility each year that gives 350 children a week the chance to experience an exciting day camp adventure.
Currently, members swim in our 50-meter pool, play ball in our three gymnasiums, tumble in our gymnastics center, and improve their health and wellness in our state-of-the-art fitness center.
The Greater Beverly YMCA is more than just a facility, though. We have an important impact on the lives of kids, adults and families in our four-community service area of Beverly, Hamilton, Wenham and Manchester.
In fact, we are proud to boast that we have 500 children every week tumbling through our doors as they take part in Gymnastics programs. We help to encourage 100 children and adults each week to express themselves through art, drama and dance, in our Arts & Humanities programs. Our swim program continues its tradition of excellence as we involve over 1,000 participants weekly, whether it is through swim lessons or any of our competitive swim team programs. At the Sterling YMCA we take health and wellness very seriously and have some 100 adults each week in specialty Health & Wellness programs. We have a variety of sports leagues, skill programs and recreational Adventure programs that 2,000 children and adults get involved in every year. At the Sterling YMCA, we believe in getting people involved and our goal is to promote a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
Come be a part of the excitement at the ever-improving Sterling YMCA!
