The YMCA of the North Shore Sharks (YNS) sent 15 of its swimmers to the recent 2008 short-course YMCA Winter Nationals swim meet at the outdoor swimming Hall of Fame pool in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Of all of the events participated in by Sharks swimmers, more than 80 percent of those represented new personal bests.

Ted Millett scored individual points for YNS in the men's 100-yard breaststroke, placing 12th overall. The men's 800 freestyle relay team, consisting of Tyler Lareau, Brian Bouvier, Millett and Andrew Reid, as well as the 400 medley relay team of Chris Miglierina, Millett, Reid and Lareau contributed team points for YNS, placing 15th and 10th, respectively.

Ten new YNS team records were set, including Millett's 100-yard breaststroke, Reid's 100-yard butterfly, Amy Needham's 100-yard butterfly, Patrick Shea's 500-yard and 1,650-yard freestyles, and all five of the men's relays.

"Y Nationals proved to be the fastest Y meet we have ever attended as a team — and the competition was top-notch," John Ogden, head coach of the Sharks, said in a statement.

"With 10 YNS team records set and all of our swimmers posting personal best times in at least two of their events, I was very happy with our desire, determination and ability to compete successfully at the national level."

The Sharks, who were recently named the No. 1 YMCA swim team in New England for the 12th consecutive year, accomplished all of these marks against the top YMCA swimmers from across the country.

At Nationals, qualified swimmers ages 12-to-21 participated, representing more than 220 YMCA swim teams across the U.S. In all, 1,585 swimmers took part in the event, where all events were swam in yards.

For more than 12 consecutive years, YNS has had a group of swimmers qualify for and compete at short-course Nationals.
