Sharks anchor Northeast win at Bay States

Wednesday, July 23, 2003

The YMCA of the North Shore Sharks (YNS) had 79 team members, alumni, parents, and coaches competing at the finals of the Bay State Games Swimming Championships at Harvard University on July 11-13.

The Sharks anchored the Northeast regional team, which repeated as champion. The Northeast scored 1,669.50 points, followed by the Central/West team at 1,298 points, the Southeast/Coastal team with 1,191, and the Metro team with 315.50 points.

The Bay State Games have normally had three age group levels of swimming competition: 10-13 year olds; 14-16; 17 and over; but this year added a Masters category, with that group further divided into three age groups: 19-34; 35-49, and 50 and over.

All groups but the Masters levels qualified at regional competitions in order to reach the finals. Masters swimmers were eligible to swim at finals without previously qualifying.

Several current members and alumni of the Sharks set Bay State Games records, including Ipswich's own Andrew DiMichele, 20, of Ipswich, with a 2:16.60 in the 200-meter butterfly and a 1:02.18 in the 100 backstroke.

The Sharks are now preparing for the YMCA Long Course National Swimming Championship, to be held at the University of Maryland on July 28-31. The Sharks are sending 28 team members to the summer national championships.
