BEVERLY -- The latest phase of the YMCA's $4 million expansion will be unveiled this weekend.
The Y is scheduled to hold an open house for its new outdoor pool on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. at its Sterling Center campus at 254 Essex St. The pool actually opened on Monday, just in time for the start of the Y's summer camps.
"We have 300 campers in four or five different camps and the pool is a big component of it," said Chris Lovasco, the Y's regional executive director. "The kids are glowing when they're in there."
The new pool is 32 by 70 feet, about 20 percent bigger than the old pool, Lovasco said. The depth ranges from an 18-inch-to-2-foot shallow end for pre-schoolers to a 3-to-8-foot deeper end.
"It's really built with camp and families in mind," Lovasco said.
The next step in the expansion project will be the opening of the new indoor pool, which is scheduled for the end of August, according to Lovasco. A new gymnastics center opened in April. Improvements are also being made to the fitness center and lobby area.
The final phase of the project, the paving and expansion of the parking lot from 125 to 220 spaces, should be done by the beginning of October, Lovasco said.
