YMCA Swim Lessons

YMCA Swim Lessons

The YMCA has been teaching children how to swim and stay safe in the water for over 100 years.  Starting with parent/child instruction and moving to progressive preschool and youth classes, participants develop stroke mechanics, confidence in the water, and teamwork and leadership skills.  

Registration is now available for Fall 2010.  Classes begin the week of September 6th.

Parent/Child (for children ages 6 months - 3 years)

  • Shrimp Kipper (6-18 months): Prerequiste: Can control head and sit without support.
  • Inia (18-24 months): Prerequiste: Can control head and sit without support
  • Perch I (24-36 months): Prerequiste: Can run and jump
  • Perch II (30-36 months): Prerequiste: Child can separate from adult

Preschool (Ages 3-6)

  • Pike with Parent:  For the new swimmer not quite ready to separate from a parent/guardian.
  • Pike: For the new swimmer, can spearate from adult to work with instructor
  • Eel:  Can perform front/back glide, and jump in water without assistance
  • Ray:  Can perform rhythmic breathing, can swim 1/2 width of 6 lane pool on front/back/side
    Starfish:
     Can swim without the use of floatation and can swim entire length of pool.

Youth (Grade 1 and up)

  • Polliwog: For new swimmers!
  • Guppy: Children can swim without floatation, can go underwater and keep their body horizontal with straight legs (25 yards)
  • Minnow: Can perform free/back/side stroke for 25 yards, and can peform the elementary back/breast stroke with arm and leg motions for 25 yards.
  • Fish:  Can peform the free strok for 50 yards, back/side stroke 25 yards, and rudimentary breast stroke 25 yards.
  • Flying Fish/Shark:  Can perform the free/back/side stroke for 200 yards and butterfly for 50 yards.

American Red Cross CPR with AED: Learn to recognzie and care for cardiac and breathing emergencies. 

  • American Red Cross First Aid: Learn to treat injuries and sudden illness.
  • Lifeguard Training (Ages 15+):  Participants must swim 300 yards continuously in the following routine:  100 yard breast crawl using rhythmic breaking and a stablizing propellent kick, 100 yards of breast stroke, 100 yards of breast stroke or front craw using rhythmic breathing.  If you prefer, you may swim the last 100 as a mix of strokes. There is no time limit to pass the pre-test.  Participants must swim 20 yards using the front crawl or breast stroke then surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet and retrieve a ten pound object.  Participants must then return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point while holding the object.  There is a 100 second time limit on this retrieval.  Class size is limited, so please sign up early!  Next class will be December 2010.
