Facility Update

February 4th, 2010

Parking:  With the expanded parking spaces completed, all members and guests must be respectful and park in designated parking spaces ONLY.  Staff members will be outside during peak times to assist in directing members to open spaces.  Please be aware there are additional spaces to those that are directly in front of the building.

Parking on islands, on the driveway, sidewalks and hill are PROHIBITED
as it causes safety hazards to all.

We are confident that members will show respect and responsibility to all when parking.

Leggs Hill Road Update:  The design has been laid out, curbing installed, sidewalks paved, the Y driveway island installed, and the roadway narrowed and signage installed.  Crosswalks will be re-painted in the spring.  Due to the cold weather, the textured crosswalks and final asphalt work will be done in the spring.

Side Parking Lot Update:  The binder coat of pavement is complete.  Installation of lights, guard rails, and curbing is completed.  Finished paving will occur in the spring as well as landscaping the island and completing the playing field when weather permits.

Back Road Lot Update: The binder coat of pavement is complete.  Installation of lights, guard rails, and steps to main lot is completed.  Finished paving will occur in the spring as well as landscaping of the area when
the weather permits.

Main Lot Update:  We have installed two walkways in the center island to provide safe and easy access to the front door.  One walkway is flat as the other is steps with a hand rail.

PLEASE DO NOT PARK BLOCKING THESE WALKWAYS

We currently have three projects underway

Additional Parking for the YMCA

The YMCA's success in meeting community needs has exceeded all expectations and therefore, we need more parking.  Fortunately, we have options on our site and we have obtained the necessary construction permits.

Construction is underway.  We are reconfiguring our playing field to increase parking spaces in our side lot as well as adding additional parking spaces along the back road.

We will gain approximately 85 new parking spaces while maintaining a playing field overlooking Salem harbor for many uses.

The project will take 8 to 10 weeks, depending on the weather.  We are confident that our parking will be increased by this winter, however,  the final paving layer will be completed as early in the spring as possible.

A temporary parking has been created at the entrance of the YMCA.
Staff will be parking in the temporary parking area or off site to accommodate our members.

Leggs Hill Road

During the original approval process to build the YMCA, our YMCA agreed to provide the City of Salem and Town of Marblehead $450,000 for offsite improvements in the area. We have worked with the Town of Marblehead and City of Salem and both have recently approved plans for improvements to Leggs Hill Road and the surrounding area.

The first phase of improvements will be to the Marblehead portion of the intersection of Leggs Hill and Londonderry Roads, and the entrance to the YMCA. To promote safety and to control speed, the road will be narrowed; textured crosswalks will be installed for pedestrian safety; sidewalks will be installed; and signage for crosswalks and stop signs will be installed.  Additionally an island in the YMCA driveway will be installed to ensure proper turns. The attached plan was approved by the Marblehead Board of Selectmen as presented by the Marblehead Planning Board.

This work began the week of November 9th and will continue for 6 to 8 weeks depending on the weather conditions.   The rest of the road improvements will be completed as early in the spring as possible due to the drainage work and improvements that need to be completed prior to paving.

The YMCA, the Town of Marblehead and the City of Salem will continue to work together to minimize the amount of disruption during construction.  A police detail will be onsite when needed and detours only enacted when necessary.

Additional Landscaping

As part of the additional parking plan, the YMCA with the assistance of a local landscape architect has committed to a plan to install many trees and shrubs on the YMCA site.

This work will be prepped while the parking construction is underway but the actual planting will occur in the spring to ensure the proper conditions for the successful growth of the trees and shrubs.

The Lynch/van Otterloo YMCA, continues to be committed to ongoing collaboration with our neighbors and our local government officials to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety for our members and our neighbors.
