History
Organized in 1858 as the Gloucester YMCA, the Cape Ann YMCA is one of the oldest YMCAs in the nation. It opened its doors to the community in a second floor space on Main Street—a place for young men to participate in activities that helped enrich their minds, bodies and spirits. The Gloucester YMCA's volunteers and leaders taught local youth positive values and worked to strengthen the Cape Ann community.
Eventually the need for a larger facility was apparent. Programming began to flourish and the community embraced the benefits the organization gave to the community and in 1906, a new facility was constructed at 71 Middle Street. The Middle Street facility would eventually grow in size to a 44,000 square foot downtown facility. Community volunteers were able to raise $1.25 million dollars to expand the Y property and the building was dedicated in 1974.
Today, there are nearly 4,000 members, with over 2,000 program participants. Ninety volunteers, including a volunteer Board of Directors and 85 full- and part-time staff, drive the Cape Ann YMCA. This community association is committed to meeting the needs of the people of Gloucester and Rockport. The Cape Ann YMCA provides opportunities and programs that foster social growth and healthy development of spirit, mind and body. Come join the fun! We can't wait to meet you.
