History
The Ipswich Family YMCA welcomes our members into a new, full-facility YMCA, completed through the generous donations of the Ipswich community. Located on the site of the Ipswich V.F.W., the YMCA houses a six-lane pool, gymnasium, multi-purpose space and fitness area.
The Ipswich YMCA originally occupied a third floor space in the former Barker Building on Central Street from the turn of the century until 1914. The Ipswich YMCA's track team included 11 young men. They competed and did quite well according to archived trophies and photos. But the need for programming was growing. Volunteers and staff saw this need and wanted to provide better services for the Ipswich community.
In 1985, the Beverly Regional YMCA launched a gymnasium program at the Ascension Memorial Church, re-establishing lost roots in Ipswich. Programming consisted of an after school day care center, preschool physical education, teen aerobics, youth sports, karate and a variety of exercise classes for all ages. Prior to programming at the church, Ipswich residents had to travel through three towns to participate in programs at the Beverly Regional YMCA. In addition, the Y worked to serve the community from a variety of other locations throughout the town of Ipswich.
In 1990, a fitness center opened at the church and by 1997 the Ipswich Y grew its members to 1,200! The need to expand was obvious. Members and residents wanted a better facility—one with a pool. Thankfully, a partnership with the Ipswich V.F.W. and the YMCA was formed resulting in a proposed new YMCA. $3.5 million dollars was raised to erect a new YMCA. Ground-breaking for the facility began in 1998 and the YMCA was dedicated in 1999.
Today, the Ipswich Family YMCA is home to 3,700 members. This beautiful facility is enjoyed by all who enter its doors. Come join the fun and get involved!

From Route 128 N or 128 S, take Route 1A North to Ipswich.
In Ipswich you will pass the Whittier Hotel and O'Keefe Chevrolet on your right, and Ipswich Ford on your left.
