History
Deeply rooted in the North Shore, the Marblehead/Swampscott YMCA has been involved in the community since opening its doors to members in 1859. In 1888 the Marblehead/Swampscott YMCA moved to the newly purchased King Hooper Mansion. Finally, in 1910 the Marblehead/Swampscott YMCA moved to the home it knows today on Pleasant Street where it became a full facility YMCA featuring a 20-yard pool, air-conditioned Wellness Center, quaint gymnasium and youth and adult locker rooms.
This facility allows the YMCA to make an impact each week by teaching over 500 kids to swim, helping 500 children learn the love of sports in Y sports skills classes, over 500 families to feel safe that their children are well cared for in Y child care programs and 130 teens and adults to enjoy a healthy lifestyle in health and fitness programs. We also teach more than 300 children each week to flip, tumble and twirl in our new, state-of-the-art gymnastics facility located at the former Warwick Theater in downtown Marblehead. But as our number of committed members and program participants grow so does our need for a larger, state-of-the-art facility that can involve more of the Marblehead and Swampscott communities.
In 2003, the Marblehead/Swampscott YMCA secured 19.5 acres of land on Leggs Hill Road to build a state-of-the-art facility. The fundraising goal was increased from $8 million to $12 million to reflect the increased size and scope of the project. The new facility will offer programming of all varieties including gymnastics, aquatics, fitness, child care, sports and more so that all may benefit from our wide range of programs. The new facility will also have four ballet studios for the Boston Ballet Center for Dance Education.
