Keeping kids active, engaged and safe all year long is our priority!
In addition to our amazing traditional day camps at our seven YMCA locations, we offer innovative initiatives like the “Mobile Y” and “Safety Around Water” ocean swim lessons which are designed to meet kids where they are...in their neighborhood, at the playground and at the beach. The Mobile Y brings staff out to local parks and neighborhoods to actively engage children in fun, traditional playground games. From kickball and stickball to red rover and capture the flag, we are here for the children in our community who may not get the chance to get to the Y. Our swim lessons at the beach and our camps throughout the summer months are just a few ways we can do everything possible to provide water safety skills to every child. Learning to swim is a necessary life skill and the Y has been committed to making swim lessons available to children and adults for more than 150 years.
We are also employing teens with our popular initiative, Clean Team. Since 1992, the Clean Team has been a constant in the Gloucester Community. Each summer, the Clean Team staff collect about 200 bags of trash and weeds from all over Gloucester, and they water over 30 plants each day! In addition to keeping Gloucester clean and beautiful, the Clean Team also participates in several service learning projects and helps with community events. This program pays teens and gives lots of kids their first job. It is for ages 14-21 years and 65% of the teens we employ are from low-income households. The Y is reaching beyond its four walls to continue its dedication as a resource for summer activities for children and families.
Tackling summer learning loss is a huge part of our summer programming. For the past four years, our Literacy Program during out-of-school time has impacted hundreds of children from our Cape Ann, Haverhill, Salem and Greater Beverly Ys. Children in grades 1-3 gained seven weeks of instructional reading and 1,500 books were read! This program is closing the Achievement Gap that plagues school children who often fall further and further behind each year, ultimately impacting their long-term learning.
Summer at the Y....Learning, giving back and having fun all rolled into one!
